2021 Brownlow Medal Wrap
Updated: Oct 14, 2021
Port Adelaide Gun Midfielder Ollie Wines Equals Vote Record To Take Out Player Of The Season Award
It was an extraordinary Brownlow medal event that took place at Optus Stadium on Sunday night. It was made all the more special by the attendance of former winner Ben Cousins. The troubled former West Coast Eagle and Richmond Tigers star looked in great shape and it was terrific to have him back
It was a history-making count this year. When Ollie Wines was announced as the winner for 2021 at 36 votes, he became the first Port Adelaide footballer to take home the Brownlow. In another first, the top four ranked players all finished on higher than 30 votes.
In first place we had Ollie Wines from Port Adelaide finish on 36 votes, leading from the front all year for Port. In addition, Wines was the favourite to win at $2.60 before the event.
In second place we had Marcus Bontempelli from the Dogs at 33 votes. He was the second favourite to win the Brownlow at $3.75.
In third place, we had Clayton Oliver, who came in at 31 votes. He was the third favourite to win $3.80. Therefore the oddsmakers were pretty spot on with their calls, as the top three favourites came in that order of the top three ranked on the night.
Other players who did quite well included:
Sam Walsh from Carlton, surprisingly came in fourth place, a stellar season from Carlton’s young star on the rise. He came in fourth on 30 votes. While Jack Steele and Darcy Parish tied for fifth at 26 votes each.
Earlier in the count, Fremantle's Caleb Serong won Goal of the Year.
Richmond's Shai Bolton won Mark of the Year for this speckie against Geelong.
It will be incredible to see in the grand final two players face off who finished in the top three votes. But well done to Ollie Wines, a truly deserved winner of the 2021 Brownlow Medal.
