A-League 2021-22 Season

ROUND ONE PREVIEW

After a much-awaited five months since Melbourne City won its historic title back in June, this weekend we are thrilled to have our beloved A-league season back.

Beginning Friday night, reigning champions Melbourne City will kick of their campaign against Brisbane Roar at AAMI Park. City start as the strong favorites to get their defending campaign off to a positive start. The last time they met Brisbane was able to get the job done 3-0 and will need to perform in a similar form if they are to cause an upset.

On Saturday night, we have two exciting derbies. Runners up Sydney FC will take on the Western Sydney Wanderers at Bankwest Stadium in the Sydney Derby. Sydney FC has been in the last three out of the last four grand finals and won three of those to take their collective championship record to five (the record in the league currently).

Melbourne Victory had a more than dismal campaign last season. Coming in last place for a historic first wooden spoon. The club has had a history of great success and is very often featured in finals and grand finals. So they will travel for a challenging Western Derby against Western United in Geelong in the hope they can get their new campaign off on the right foot. It will be interesting to see how Victory performs under experienced new manager, Tony Popovich. Along with their strong recruits in the off-season such as gaining back Jason Geria and Stephan Nigro, also gaining Matthew Sprianovic and Brendan Hamill. It is an exciting time ahead for the Victory.

Perth Glory is facing Adelaide United at home. They will be confident they can get their season off to the right start, having won their last six clashes against Adelaide.

On Sunday, Newcastle will host the Central Coast Mariners. Central Coast will be looking to build on last year when they returned to the finals, and hope they can go further into the finals action. They should be confident to get the job done in Newcastle.

In Campbelltown, Macarthur FC will take on the Wellington Phoenix. Macarthur made an impressive season debut last year, reaching the last four. This will round out the first week of this season, in what looks like an enthralling first week of Football in season 2021/22.
