Emmys 2021: Wins For Ted Lasso and The Crown

Updated: Oct 7, 2021

Ted Lasso, Mare of Easttown, and The Crown dominate

The 73rd Annual Emmy Awards were tonight, here at thepyrrhic.com we took a look at the big winners from TV‘s biggest awards night.

TED LASSO

Ted Lasso, an American sports comedy-drama, went into Sunday with 20 Emmy nominations behind it. It’s been a fan favorite, streaming on Apple +. When all was said and done, it netted 6 awards - not too bad!

Emmys include Outstanding Casting For A Comedy Series. Jason Sudeikis earned an Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series. Costars Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein both receive Outstanding Supporting Actress and Actor, respectively.

Ted Lasso features Sudeikis as a small-time football coach, recruited to coach a professional soccer team in England. He has, of course, no experience in soccer (just because they call it football there) and finds himself out of his element.

Who Is Hannah Waddingham?

This is the first Emmy win for Hannah Waddingham. Hannah plays the owner of the soccer team in Ted Lasso, who recently won the team in a divorce settlement. She hires Sudeikis in an attempt to run the team into the ground, as a means of humiliating her now-ex-husband.

Waddingham is an English actress known primarily for her work in London’s West End musical theater, particularly for originating the role of the Lady of the Lake in the original Spamalot. She’s also performed in musicals such as Kiss Me Kate, Into the Woods, and more.

Who Is Brett Goldstein?

Brett Goldstein had some work to do for that Supporting Actor role. There were 8 contenders in the category - half from Ted Lasso. Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, and Jeremy Swift were all nominated along with Goldstein, though he managed to nab it in the end.

Goldstein both writes and acts on the show. Goldstein is known for his work in British films and television. In 2013, he broke out as Tom in Ricky Gervais’ show Derek. In 2015, he starred in the British film SuperBob.

THE CROWN

Gillian Anderson won her 6th Emmy tonight at the 73rd Emmy Awards. She won in the category Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama. Anderson portrays Margaret Thatcher on the show.

Other actresses nominated in the category include Emerald Fennell and Helena Bonham Carter, also from The Crown. Aunjunue Ellis for Lovecraft Country was also nominated. The other 4 nominees were all The Handmaid’s Tale actresses - Samira Wiley, Madeline Brewer, Yvonne Strahovski, and Ann Dowd.

MARE OF EASTTOWN

Mare of Easttown, which stars Kate Winslet investigating a murder in a Philadelphia suburb, earned 16 total Emmy nominations.

Winslet won the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series. Evan Peters also won the Emmy for the Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series. Fans hope that means that Mare of Easttown might be given a second season - as a limited series, it was written for just one standalone season.

While winning awards might be good motivation, nothing is confirmed. Both the show’s creator and Kate Winslet seem to agree that, while they might someday consider another season, they haven’t planned for one.
