Bottas Claims 1st Victory Of The Season As Verstappen Reclaims Championship Lead
Max Verstappen has taken the lead in this season's thrilling F1 drivers championship with a second-place finish.
World Champion rival Lewis Hamilton started from 11th on the grid after taking a grid penalty for an engine change this race. Compounding his frustration was a questionable decision from his pit crew to force him to pit from the third spot.
This cost him two spots he would not be able to reclaim as he finished in the fifth spot handing second place getter Max Verstappen a 6 point lead in the World Championship standings. Hamilton did not hide his displeasure from his team as he fumed on team comms saying:
“Fuck, man, why did you give up that place? We shouldn’t have come in,”
Hamilton definitely was entertaining to watch during the race however as he sliced and diced his way through traffic after starting from 11th place, but the day belonged to teammate Valtteri Bottas who picked up his first chequered flag of the season. The Flying Fin had a relatively straightforward pole to flag victory and will be delighted at picking up his first lot of maximum points for the 2021 season. Speaking post-race the delighted veteran had this to say:
“I think from my side that’s probably one of the best races I’ve had ever, Apart from that one little slide, everything was just under control. It’s not easy to choose the strategy here when to stop and to which tire and everything but I’m glad everything went smoothly for me, for once and that’s nice.”
With Dutchman Verstappen taking second place, the gap between him and Hamilton at the top of the standings is just 6 points. Incredibly, today's result marks the 4th lead change at the summit of the F1 Drivers Championship in the last 6 races. With just 6 races left, this World Championship could go all the way, right down to the wire.
