US Open '21: Raducanu Into Final

Updated: Oct 13, 2021

British Contender Books Ticket To All Teenager Final

EMMA RADUCANU defeated MARIA SAKKARI 6-1, 6-4

18-year-old British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu has booked herself a spot in one of the most unlikely U.S Open finals in the history of the women's draw. On Saturday, September 11th, Raducanu will face a fellow teenage sensation from Canada - Leylah Fernandez.

Raducanu made light work of Greek superstar Maria Sakkari in the first set, showing no signs of nerves as she only dropped one game on her way to taking the first set 6-1.

Things weren't quite as comfortable in the second set as Sakkari refused to throw up the white flag. Despite this Raducanu got the all-important break early in the second set. Sakkari never really recovered as she showed nerves of steel beyond her years to set up an all teenage final at Flushing Meadows. It's the first since Serena Williams and Martina Hingis went head to head in the '99 final.

Raducanu's incredible run not only crowns her as the first finalist to have played all the way since the first qualifying round. In the 9 subsequent matches, she has not dropped one set. Believe it or not, 100 days ago she had never played a set of tour tennis before.

When she was asked if she felt the pressure of expectation after qualifying for the final in her post-match interview, the 18-year-old responded with -

"Is there any expectation? I am a qualifier. Nothing is expected from me."

The unheralded teens will face each other in one of the most anticipated women's finals in recent history. I, for one, cannot wait.
