US Open '21: Raducanu Into The Semi-Finals

Updated: Oct 13, 2021

Teen Through To Semi-Finals Without Dropping A Set

British 18-year-old Emma Raducanu has made it to the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows with a convincing 6-3, 6-4 victory over Swiss 11th seed Belinda Bencic.

Things did not start well for the teen sensation as she found herself down 3-1 in the opening set. In one of the more incredible runs at this year's tournament (and believe me there have been a few), the youngster went on to win 6 of the last 7 games to win the set 6-3.

Things went more to form in the second set, Raducanu got the early break. Bencic showed great determination to bring herself back from the brink a couple of times in that second set, but once Raducanu had the break it was never in question - she was going to the semi-finals. When Bencic hit the net off of her second serve at 40-30 (5-4) it was confirmed!

Clearly stunned after defeating the current Olympic gold medallist she said-

"I was 0-30 in my last couple of service games, so to hold was pretty big, it was literally one point at a time, trying to focus on what I can control, my serve, landing the first serve. Belinda's an incredibly tough opponent, but I'm just really pleased to come through."
"To have so many young players here, doing so well, it just shows how strong the next generation is, Leylah is doing incredibly well. She's really nice, she was handing out cupcakes for her 19th birthday. Everyone's on their trajectory. I'm just here, taking care of what I can control, and it's my journey at the end of the day."

With this victory, Emma becomes the first women's player to reach the semi-final at the US Open having played all the qualifying rounds. She also becomes the first British woman since Jo Barker in 1983 to reach a US Open semi-final. And the last and perhaps most incredible fact about Raducanus incredible run is she is yet to drop a set!
