The First New Single From Adele In 5 Years

'Hot girl summer' might be over, but it's shaping up to be a perfect 'sad girl fall.' Adele's new single "Go Easy On Me" came out Thursday, with her new album 30 ready to drop on November 19th. This is hot on the heels of the one and only Taylor Swift's Fearless (Taylor's Version) album re-release.

And the single certainly delivers the 'sad girl' aesthetic. Her first in 5 years, she sings with the same soulful, emotional resonance that she did on previous hits like "Rolling In The Deep" or "Set Fire to the Rain."

The sorrow is real and palpable. But it's also understandable - earlier this year she divorced Simon Konicki after separating in 2019. The singer shares a 9-year-old son with her ex-husband, and they began dating back in 2011 - that's a lot of history.

But Adele notes that the album isn't all about her divorce. In an interview with Vogue, Adele admits that she left the marriage in, "the pursuit of my own happiness." She continues to explain, "I was just going through the motions and I wasn’t happy. Neither of us did anything wrong. Neither of us hurt each other or anything like that. It was just: I want my son to see me really love, and be loved. It’s really important to me."

Adele also describes a troubling wake-up call from her child, when he made an off-hand comment that he couldn't see her. Suddenly aware that perhaps she was losing herself, she remembers how her, "whole life fell apart in that moment."

She wrote a song for Angelo, her son, the very next day. Then she wrote other songs, trying to explain -perhaps to him, perhaps to herself - why she had to make the choices she was making, why it was necessary to change up her life. She later describes on social media that the album was her, “ride or die throughout the most turbulent period of my life.”

She goes on to clarify in her Vogue interview that the album isn't all about Konicki. Instead, she says, "It was more me divorcing myself. Just being like, ‘Bitch, fuckin’ hot mess, get your fuckin’ shit together!"
